Police in southern Germany say “it was just luck” that saved 20 refugees from getting hurt when a grenade failed to detonate after getting thrown into a residence early Friday morning.

Police had to evacuate 250 residents and call in a bomb squad to destroy the device. No suspects have been arrested and authorities are investigating the destroyed parts of the grenade for more evidence.

“I think we can say for sure the perpetrators did not belong to the local ‘Refugees Welcome’ group,” local police spokesman Thomas Kalmbach told reporters.

Attacks on asylum centers have become a regular occurrence in Germany in recent months. The country is currently hosting more than one million refugees in crammed shelters, which arsonists often target.

A series of Molotov cocktails were thrown into a center in late December. Police believe the perpetrators tried to set the building on fire, but no one got hurt from the explosions.

Hostility between Germans and refugees has been particularly evident since the sexual assault attacks on women by refugees across the country on New Year’s Eve.

Members of anti-immigration group PEGIDA had their cars set on fire Monday night during a demonstration in the city of Dresden.
