Sen. Bernie Sanders topped former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in fundraising for the month of January, a tough pill to swallow for the Clinton campaign, which is coming off a narrow victory at the Iowa caucuses.

Clinton’s campaign announced Thursday it had raised $15 million in January, falling far short of Sanders, whose campaign raised $20 million dollars during the same period.

“For the first time this campaign, we’re being outraised by our opponent,” Clinton’s campaign said in a Thursday email blast to supporters. “Bernie raised more than $20 million in January (and another $3 million so far this month) — we fell short at only $15 million for Hillary for America. If you’ve believed that Hillary Clinton is going to win this election because other people are going to step up and take care of it, this should be a very loud wake-up call.”

Clinton relies on larger donors, many of whom have already given the maximum legal amount, while Sanders relies more on individual donors who can give more money later in the campaign.

“Unlike other presidential campaigns, 99.9 percent of Sanders’ supporters may give again because they have not reached the legal limit on donations to traditional campaign committees,” Sanders’ campaign said in a statement last month. “Only a few hundred of the more than 1 million Sanders donors have given the maximum $2,700.”

Overall, Clinton has still raised the most money out of the candidates. She has garnered $130 million while Sanders is at $105 million.

“There’s no cavalry coming — it’s just people like you who are going to decide whether or not to step up to elect the first woman president our country has ever had,” Clinton’s campaign email reads. The email ends by asking for just one dollar.
