A California school district denounced its teachers union for proposing a contract it claims would allow teachers to carry firearms and have inappropriate relationships with their students, according to reports Monday.

The Natomas Unified School District (NUSD) has been in negotiations with the Natomas Teachers Association (NTA) for a new teachers contract. The school district claimed in a recent update the latest contract proposal would prevent teachers from being fired even if they are carrying firearms or have inappropriate relationships with students. The union has denied it.

“We are shocked, disappointed and offended,” NTA President Phil Cox said. “It’s utterly false. The intent of the proposal that we submitted was to give the district tools to deal with teachers that may step outside the lines of professionalism.”

The contract proposal does not explicitly mention firearms or teachers having inappropriate relationships with students. It does, however, include new provisions which may make it impossible to fire teachers. The school must first issue several warnings before it can suspend a teacher. The suspension cannot be more than 15 days and it has to be paid.

“We want to drive home the point that this is simply not something we can accept,” Natomas Unified Spokesperson Jim Sanders told the local affiliate of CBS News in an email. “Nor do we think the community can accept it.”

The school district has stood by its accusations despite the union’s rebuffs. The next board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday in the late afternoon. NUSD and NTA did not respond to a request for comment by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
