Some parents at a Virginia high school are up in arms after the school showed students a YouTube video that promotes affirmative action and encourages white guilt.

The video, titled “The Unequal Opportunity Race,” has been on YouTube for over five years. The video features a race between white and non-white competitors. The white runners receive a huge head start thanks to “genocide,” “Manifest Destiny,” and a host of other factors. Even once they start the race, the non-white runners are sabotaged by a rainstorm (“segregation”), rocks (“poor schooling”), and even a shark-infested pool (“standardized tests”). Eventually, all the runners are defeated by a white male riding a conveyor belt (“privilege”) who then celebrates as though he is the legitimate victor.

“Affirmative action helps level the playing field,” the video says at the end.

The film was shown at Glen Allen High School in Henrico County, Va., as part of the school’s Black History Month programming. At least some people in the community are appalled.

“They are sitting there watching a video that is dividing them up from a racial standpoint. It’s a White guilt kind of video,” Don Blake, whose granddaughter saw the video, complained to local station NBC 12. “I think somebody should be held accountable for this.”

Henrico County Public Schools issued a statement defending the use of the video, arguing that it was part of a balanced program on racial issues.

“The students participated in a presentation that involved American history and racial discourse. A segment of the video was one component of a thoughtful discussion in which all viewpoints were encouraged,” the district said. “As always, we are welcoming of feedback from students and their families, and we address concerns directly as they come forward.”
