As Iran celebrates “Islamic Victory Day” Wednesday, Rep. [crscore]Peter Roskam[/crscore] took to the House floor to comment on what he believes is the utter failure of U.S. policy towards Iran.

“The regime celebrates 37 years since the violent coup that brought the Ayatollah Khomeini to power and transformed Iran into a fundamentalist Islamic theocracy and the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism,” said Roskam.

Roskam referred to the nearly 40-year rule of the Islamic Republic as “a dark period of history” in which “thousands of innocent people were killed as the revolutionaries consolidated power.”

The Republican made it evidently clear that the same regime that engages in systematic repression of its own people, is the still the same Iran the U.S. is dealing with today. More importantly, it is the same Iran that the U.S. and other world powers signed a nuclear deal with — a deal Roskam sees as remarkably dangerous.

“The Islamic Republic has been led by two Supreme Leaders – both zealots fanatically committed to the revolutionary ideals being celebrated on the streets of Tehran on this day,” noted Roskam.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei noted just weeks after the deal was signed that it will not change his policy towards the U.S., despite hopes from President Barack Obama that lifting sanctions via the deal would in improve U.S – Iranian relations.

“The only day being celebrated by some Americans at the moment is Implementation Day, as President Obama’s dangerous nuclear deal has now come and gone,” he said, chastising those like Secretary of State John Kerry who hailed implementation day in January.

Under the deal, Roskam noted that “Iran, the leading patron of global terrorism, just received a $100 billion check.”

“The Obama Administration has long argued that we’d only be giving them 50 billion dollars – as if that’s somehow acceptable – but now they’ve conceded the total was, in fact, more than $100 billion,” he continued, “We were also told that Iran would moderate its behavior as a result of this capitulation.”

Implementation day, which occurred Jan. 16, marked the confirmation from the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency that Iran had supposedly fulfilled a certain amount of commitments regarding its nuclear program. In return, the international powers began removing sanctions on the Islamic republic, as well as beginning the process to release the $100 billion dollars Roskam mentions.

“It doesn’t take much imagination to figure out what Iran will do with another hundred billion dollars, this windfall it’s about to receive as a result of this bad deal,” warned Roskam. “As President Obama and Secretary Kerry have both begrudgingly admitted, it’s nearly certain the Iranians will use this money to sow the seeds of even more death and destruction.”

The representative was keen to make known that Iran is “a dangerous geopolitical foe led by a cult of extremists hell-bent on our annihilation.”

“I truly believe President Obama has made perhaps the most dangerous foreign policy blunder of our lifetimes.”

He ended by imploring Congress to do whatever it can to prevent what he feels is a major threat to U.S. and international security.
