Johnny Depp Plays Donald Trump, And Yet It’s Not Funny

Font Size:

I like it when Donald Trump is mocked and humiliated. I like Johnny Depp doing weird, unexpected things. I like fake ’80s artifacts. So I wanted to laugh at the following movie, which combines all three. But Adam McKay has failed me once again.

Funny Or Die just released a 50-minute sketch that’s purportedly a long-lost TV-movie version of The Art of the Deal, starring The Donald himself. It’s a funny idea. Ron Howard even did his best Marty DiBergi impression to introduce it. But all I could hear were crickets.

Here’s the trailer.

Funny Or Die Presents Donald Trump's The Art Of The Deal: The Movie from Funny Or Die

You can watch the whole thing here. Maybe you’ll enjoy it more than I did. Or at least the first 10 minutes of it, which was where I tapped out. The Kenny Loggins song was good, but that was the only time I laughed. If only they’d spent as much time on the script as they did on the uncannily accurate Trump makeup. Patton Oswalt hasn’t been in anything this bad since Nature Calls.

Well, at least all involved have signalled their virtue. Don’t yell at them, libs. They’re on your team. See?
