Macedonian police gassed a mob of refugees Monday morning when they descended onto the border gate, almost tearing it down.

Refugees threw stones at police, chanting “Open the Border,” according to the Guardian.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) confirmed via Twitter the use of tear gas. MSF has been treating those injured in the incident, including several children.

A rumor that the Macedonia-Greece border was opening spread throughout Idomeni, a refugee camp, causing the gathering at the gate into Macedonia.

Macedonia is on the northern border of Greece. The camp lays on the border between Macedonia and Greece and acts as the main transit point for refugees traveling to from Greece into Western Europe.

According to Greek officials, more than 8,000 refugees reside at the overcrowded Idomeni border camp.

Living conditions at Idomeni continue to deteriorate. Refugees wait hours in line for basic necessities like food and the toilet.

With the influx of refugees and tight restrictions imposed by their northern neighbors, Greece fears it could become a ‘parking lot’ for refugees.

Up to 70,000 refugees could soon be stranded in Greece. The German chancellor said this influx could paralyze the Grecian government.
