Sen. Ted Cruz has upset front-runner Donald Trump in the Alaska presidential caucuses.
Cruz took around 36 percent of the vote, versus Trump’s approximately 33 percent. They’ll split the delegates 12 to 11 respectively. Having secured the endorsement of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, it was suggested that Trump would likely win the race, however, Cruz was able to secure Alaska, Oklahoma and his home state of Texas on Super Tuesday.
Polls closed in Alaska at 8 p.m. local time, with Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, and former Ohio Gov. John Kasich pulling down 15, 11 and 4 percent respectively.
What Alaska has in land mass it lacks in population numbers, but the nation’s largest state is still significant since it carries 28 delegate votes, just two shy of the total amount in Iowa. Alaska is also home to a significant GOP voting bloc, sporting around 136,000 registered Republicans. Democrats will take part in their presidential preference poll later this month.
