German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is all about welcoming minorities to the country, as long as they don’t compromise their food culture.

Public institutions in Germany are increasingly cutting pork from their menus out of respect for religious minorities. CDU’s regional branch in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein will now propose legislation that protect the people’s right to pork, by making it a mandatory option on menus.

“More and more canteens, kindergartens and schools are taking pork out of their menus so as to cater for religious custom,” Daniel Günther, CDU leader in the state, said Tuesday. “We insist on a healthy and balanced diet. In our culture, eating pork is a part of that.”

Pork dishes, such as the bratwurst sausage, are a staple of German food culture. A similar law passed in Randers, Denmark, where pork is now a mandatory option to have at public institutions. Günther and CDU want to follow Denmark’s lead before it’s too late. (RELATED: Pork Wins ‘Meatball War’ With Muslim Immigration In Danish City)

“The protection of minorities – including for religious reasons – must not mean that the majority is overruled in their free decision by ill-conceived consideration,” Günther said.

Other parties think legislation on food options are a bit extreme. The Green Party makes fun of the proposal with a social media campaign called “Wurst Case Scenario.”
