Liberal anti-fossil fuel activists are really frustrated the majority of Americans keep electing Republicans to represent them who disagree with claims that human activities are causing catastrophic global warming.
New research by the Center for American Progress (CAP) Action Fund claims that while 76 percent of Americans believe global warming is happening, 63 percent of the country is represented by “someone in Congress who denies the reality of climate change.”
“Following the second straight year that earned the title of hottest year on record, 59 percent of the Republican House caucus and 70 percent of Republicans in the Senate deny the scientific consensus that climate change is happening and humans are the main cause,” according to an article published on the blog ThinkProgress — the media wing of the CAP Action Fund.
“There are 182 climate deniers in the 114th Congress in 2016 — 144 in the House and 38 in the Senate,” reads the ThinkProgress article. “According to the U.S. Census, that means 202,803,591 people are represented by a climate denier in Congress.”
CAP argues there are more global warming “deniers” in Congress this year than there were when they conducted the same survey last year. ThinkProgress notes “since then 14 House members have revealed themselves to be climate deniers from their public statements. The number stayed the same in the Senate.”
For liberals, this is a huge problem. It signals their millions of dollars in spending to convince people of the dangers of global warming have largely fallen flat. And while liberals point to polling showing three out of four Americans believe global warming exists, there’s more polling indicating warming is not a top concern for voters.
A February YouGov poll of 18,000 people in 17 countries found only 9.2 percent of Americans rank global warming as their biggest concern. The biggest concern for Americans was global terrorism — 28 percent listed it as their top issue.
Before that, a November Fox News poll of more than 1,000 registered voters found only 3 percent listed “climate change” as the most important issue facing the country, down from 5 percent in August.
Again, Americans were much more worried about terrorism, the economy and immigration than global warming.
The Fox poll found that even among Democrats concern for global warming was low. Only 6 percent of Democrats listed global warming as their top concern, compared to 1 percent of Republicans. Men were slightly more likely than women to list global warming as their top concern, and whites were more likely than blacks to worry about warming.
