Mother Mary Angelica, founder of the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN), died Sunday at the age of 92.

Angelica founded the Catholic network in 1981, which has now spread to multiple continents and reaches 264 million homes in 144 countries.

“Mother Angelica is the only woman in the history of television to found and lead a cable network for 20 years,” Raymond Arroyo, managing editor of EWTN’s news division, said in a video lauding Angelica’s life.

Angelica became a TV personality as the network grew. She addressed a range of social and theological issues and was recognized by Pope Benedict XVI for her services in 2009.

“Mother has always and will always personify EWTN, the network that God asked her to found,” EWTN Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael Warsaw told EWTN News. “Her accomplishments and legacies in evangelization throughout the world are nothing short of miraculous and can only be attributed to divine Providence and her unwavering faithfulness to Our Lord.”

Several debilitating strokes left Angelica in poor health. She retired from the network in 2001.

“Mother Angelica succeeded at a task the nation’s bishops themselves couldn’t achieve,” Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia, a member of EWTN’s board of governors, said in a statement. “She founded and grew a network that appealed to everyday Catholics, understood their needs and fed their spirits. She had a lot of help, obviously, but that was part of her genius.”
