The main union for border patrol agents made its first-ever presidential endorsement Wednesday by announcing support for Republican candidate Donald Trump.

National union leaders have relentlessly attacked Trump throughout the election for his stances on immigration and labor law. The National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) decided to join a small group of unions by breaking with the labor movement to endorse him. NBPC says it supports Trump for his strong leadership.

“We will not, however, shy away from voicing our opinions as it pertains to border security,” NBPC says in a press release. “Mr. Trump will take on special interests and embrace the ideas of rank-and-file Border Patrol agents rather than listening to the management yes-men who say whatever they are programmed to say. This is a refreshing change that we have not seen before.”

NBPC initially seemed opposed to Trump when Local 2455 of the union cancelled a meeting with him July 23 after Trump said some illegal immigrants are probably rapists.

The AFL-CIO has begun mobilizing members and supporters on the grassroots level to speak out against Trump. The International Association of Machinists stated Dec. 10 his campaign is based in fear mongering and racism. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has also condemned him on numerous occasions.

The Trump campaign did not respond to request for comment by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
