If you don’t have a bank account or credit card and still need to pay taxes, local 7-Elevens will now accept cash payments.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced Wednesday it was introducing the new option allowing individuals to make payments at 7,000 locations in 34 states across the nation.
The agency partnered with ACI Worldwide’s OfficialPayments.com and the PayNearMe Company to develop the unusual process.
Those looking to take advantage of the new method just have to log on to IRS.gov’s payments page and select the cash option. OfficialPayments.com will then send an email confirming their information, which is then supposed to be verified by the IRS. The user can then print or have a payment code texted to them to bring to the convenience store. The taxpayer is given a receipt for their records after the payment is made.
Individuals can pay up to $1000 a day and are charged a small fee of $3.99 per payment.
“Because PayNearMe involves a three-step process, the IRS urges taxpayers choosing this option to start the process well ahead of the tax deadline to avoid interest and penalty charges,” the agency explained in a statement.
The IRS has partnered with Official Payments for over a decade, allowing taxpayers to use their credit cards to make payments.
“We continue to look for new ways to provide services for our taxpayers. Taxpayers have many options to pay their tax bills by direct debit, a check or a credit card, but this provides a new way for people who can only pay their taxes in cash without having to travel to an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center,” IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said in a statement.
