Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton would create a new federal agency to streamline government immigration services as president, she’s scheduled to announce Wednesday.
The former secretary of state would create a new agency called the Office of Immigrant Affairs to coordinate federal immigration policy and services, reported The Wall Street Journal. She’ll make the announcement in conjunction with a scheduled endorsement from the New York State Immigrant Action Fund, an advocacy group for immigrants.
The new agency would help illegal immigrants, a Clinton aide told TheWSJ, and coordinate programs and policies at the local, state and federal level to help “integrate” immigrants and refugees into their communities.
Clinton and Sanders have been battling for the perception as most welcoming to immigrants, and her announcement comes ahead of a key New York primary where the support of latino voters will be important. Clinton continues to lead Sanders in delegates, despite his high favorability ratings and a string of recent primary victories.
