Nearly a hundred people were arrested Tuesday in ongoing “Democracy Spring” protests outside the U.S. capitol over liberal campaign finance laws and new voter identification laws.

Capitol police arrested 85 protesters Tuesday during a sit in taking place in a restricted area. Protesters say they intended to get arrested to draw attention to their various causes, and many of the protesters arrested Tuesday were in a group of 400 taken into custody Monday.

Democracy Spring is a non-partisan group centered on getting money out of politics, arguing its at the root of the problems plaguing America’s political system. Organizers have protests focusing on different issues scheduled through the weekend, including special interest and Wall Street influence in politics and new voter identification laws critics believe are designed to stop minorities from voting.

“All of these days are about lifting up this common struggle that we have to win a government that works for us all and not just for the billionaire class, not just for the 1 percent,” Newkirk told Fox 5. “To change the way our elections work.”

Protesters gathered in Philadelphia and marched to Washington D.C. this week to participate in organized sit-ins that resulted in 400 arrests Monday and close to a hundred arrests Tuesday.

Kai Newkirk, a lead organizer of “Democracy Spring” says the protests have set the record for the largest civil disobedience event at Capitol Hill in history. He argues they are fighting for issues people in all parties can agree with.

“Tomorrow is going be a day focusing on racial justice and centering black lives within this movement and this country and the fight for Democracy,” Kai Newkirk of Democracy Spring told Fox 5. “On Thursday, it will be a labor and worker-focused day. On Friday, youth students as well as making the connection with the struggle for equal representation in D.C. On Saturday, a climate and environmental movement-focused day.”
