A campaign for the D.C. Council seat in the District’s Ward 7 devolved into an epic Twitter brawl Thursday, after an aide to one of the candidates referred to their opponent as a suicide bomber in an interview with local press.

Yvette Alexander is running to hold onto her seat representing Ward 7 voters in east D.C., but is being challenged by former mayor Vincent Gray. He previously held the Ward 7 seat, and is setting his sights back on it after a 2010 campaign finance corruption scandal sidelined his political ambitions.

Alexander sent two email blasts ripping Gray’s campaign after the release of about 1,000 pages of court documents from the scandal investigation last Friday, although Gray has not been charged in connection with the scandal. His campaign quickly shot back at Alexander.

“She’s not going to take him out,” Gray spokesman Chuck Thies told Washington City Paper. “She’s one of those inept suicide bombers. It’s like Yvette’s back on Team Gray, and she doesn’t even realize it.”

Thies then took to Twitter Thursday, trolling Alexander with a picture of an apparently empty campaign event she was holding. The at first polite back and forth quickly turned into an epic Twitter battle.

“Where is everyone?” Thies tweeted, along with the picture.

“Thanks for coming Chuck,” Alexander replied. “You must’ve been late because we had a packed house!! All the best at your Denny’s happy hour.”

The attacks stopped after a Ward 7 resident and organizer chimed in, calling their public feud political trash.
