Cleveland has agreed to pay a $6 million settlement to Tamir Rice‘s family, Fox 8 Cleveland reports.
The city will pay half in 2016 and the other half in 2017 and admitted to no wrongdoing in the settlement, which was reported Monday morning. Rice’s mother Samaria and sister Tajai will get $250,000 each, and the rest will go to Tamir’s estate. The family agreed to discuss a settlement in March.
Officers rolled up on 12-year-old Rice in November, 2014, after a police dispatcher informed them the boy might be an active shooter. In a video of the incident, Rice appears to reach for a gun at his waist, prompting police to fatally shoot him. The gun turned out to be a toy. Protesters accused the officers of failing to get Rice medical help.
A grand jury decided in December the two police officers involved in the shooting will not go to trial. The Department of Justice is still reviewing the case to see if any civil rights laws were violated.
The shooting became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement and a source of bad press for the city. In February, the city sparked outrage when it filed a claim to get payment on an overdue $500, the cost of Rice’s ambulance ride after he was shot by officers. The city later said it was a mistake.
Cleveland may have another issue on its hands. The city is beefing up security and taking serious measures to prepare for the possibility of riots at the upcoming Republican National Convention. Many fear if Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump does not win the nomination, there could be civil unrest. The city is buying riot gear to prepare for the event.
