A retired Department of the Interior (DOI) information technology specialist accessed “an unknown number of personnel documents,” the agency’s inspector general (IG) recently reported.

The former employee used the DOI’s Interior Business Center (IBC) after previously receiving the password from the system administrator – a former colleague, according to an IG report made public Thursday.

“We found that Dana Beach, a retired IBC IT specialist, accessed the IBC network without authorization seven times after her retirement,” the report said. Beach “remotely accessed another IBC employee’s account and gained access to an unknown number of personnel documents.”

Beach pleaded guilty to one charge of computer intrusion Aug. 4, 2015, and was given two years of probation, was prohibited from federal employment, and was banned from federal contracts until Oct. 13, 2018. (RELATED: Porn, Prostitution And Bribes: 8 Times The DOJ Let Bad Bureaucrats Off The Hook)

“Beach gained access by using a current system administrator’s password,” the report said. “The system administrator shared his password with Beach on a regular basis and maintained a list of IBC employees’ passwords in violation of DOI policy.”

“We could not determine that the system administrator had any knowledge of the IT specialist’s computer intrusions,” the report continued.

The IG did not name the administrator, who was “issued a letter of reprimand for sharing his administrative password,” the report continued. (RELATED: Here’s Why It’s All But Impossible To Fire A Fed)
