A senator supporting Hillary Clinton for president reminded a campaign audience on Monday of just how cash-driven the candidate is by leading a sing-along to the Donna Summer classic “She Works Hard For The Money.”
“She works hard for the money, so hard for the money. She works for the money, so we’d better treat her right,” Delaware Sen. Tom Carper during his introduction of Clinton, reciting lyrics to the 1983 classic.
“Sing together. She works hard for the money!” he began, as the audience filled in the rest of the lyrics.
Carper’s musical reference may not have been the best choice for Clinton. The former secretary of state has been heavily criticized for her fundraising activities and for charging $225,000, on average, for corporate speeches. She and husband Bill Clinton has earned more than $100 million for speeches since leaving the White House in 2001. Clinton has also outraised all other presidential candidates during the 2016 cycle. Earlier this month she attended an event hosted by actor George Clooney where top tickets fetched $353,400.
An added irony is that Summer’s inspiration for her most popular song was a woman with far different means than Clinton. The blue collar ballad refers to a Los Angeles woman named Onetta Johnson, who worked as a bathroom attendant in Los Angeles.
“Tomorrow, we’re going to treat her right,” Carper said of Clinton on Monday, seemingly unaware of the irony of the moment. “We’re going to treat her right on election day in November.”
“She will treat this country right,” he continued.
