Germany’s rising nationalist party, Alternative fur Deutschland (AfD), announced its intentions to fight against Muslim influence on German society during its party convention Sunday.

AfD is polling as the third largest party in the country with 13 percent support in national polls. The party has gone from insignificant just a year ago, to a serious threat for Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union-led coalition in the 2017 election. (RELATED: Germany’s Nationalist Party Proposes Fence To Stop Immigration)

“In the summer of 2015, they gave us up for dead,” party leader Frauke Petry said at the convention, according to Deutsche Welle.

The ongoing migrant crisis has given AfD new life. The party exceeded expectations in local elections in March by reaching double-digit results in every state.

The party has denied accusations of being xenophobic in the past, and simply said it wants to control immigration as “modern conservatives.” When party members voted on a new platform Sunday, AfD clearly took a stand against the Islamic religion’s presence in Germany.

A proposed statement in the party platform read: “Stop Islam, but seek a dialogue with Islam.” The statement was booed down by attendees for being too moderate, and it was later revised to “Islam is not a part of Germany.”

AfD further wants to outlaw minarets and the muezzin’s call to prayer, as well as the burqa.
