During the opening night of the Cannes Film Festival in France Tuesday, Laurent Lafitte laughed about the director’s sexual assault allegations on stage. (RELATED: Ricky Gervais Just Angered The Trans Community With This Caitlyn Jenner Joke)

“It’s very nice that you’ve been shooting so many movies in Europe, even if you are not being convicted for rape in the U.S.,” Lafitte said.

The joke was apparently a reference to Roman Polanski — who fled to France in 1978 after pleading guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

Though there were several audible gasps from the audience, Allen later told a table of people that it didn’t bother him.

“Woody Allen said he wasn’t offended by the rape joke at yesterday’s #Cannes2016 opening ceremony,” a reporter for Variety tweeted Wednesday.

Allen also added that he had not read his estranged son Ronan Farrow’s essay, which reminded people that his sister Dylan Farrow once accused Allen of sexual abuse. (RELATED: Ricky Gervais Won’t Apologize For Caitlyn Jenner Joke That Offended Everyone)
