MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace argued that if Hillary Clinton loses to Donald Trump in November it will be because Bernie Sanders stayed in the presidential race so long and due to his effective attacks on the Democratic front-runner.

Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Tuesday, Wallace said that “what it say is stunning is that Bernie Sanders is still in the race delivering humiliating loss after humiliating loss to Hillary Clinton weakening her.”

“If you study the psychology of a swing voter, when they hear a negative message from a politician from a partisan on one side and they same negative message about a politician from a partisan on the extreme opposite side it starts to sink in,” Wallace argued.

Wallace, who was George W. Bush’s former communications adviser, said, “I think that should Hillary Clinton get edged out by Donald Trump in November, what will be interesting to me is that this is what had happened. When Bernie Sanders stayed in the race, when he had no mathematical possibility of being the Democratic nominee and beat the you know what out of her night after night, went after her credentials, went after her ethics, went after her character. And then Donald Trump picked up those attacks and went after her character and went after ethics and went after her energy and I think it will have been the period when the most damage was done to Hillary Clinton.”
