Taxpayer-funded yoga classes for federal employees will be relics of the past if Republican Rep. Matt Salmon of Arizona has his way.
He’s introduced a bill to prohibit agencies from using tax funds to provide yoga classes for their workers. The Department of State, Department of Energy, Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency and Railroad Retirement Board all offer free yoga to their employees at some office locations, costing taxpayers more than $168,000 over the last five years, according to Salmon.
“This bill is about sending a simple message: The government isn’t Google, so stop trying to be,” Salmon said in a statement. “Startups across our country are offering unique benefits to their employees in exchange for working in a developing business with a new culture. But bureaucrats in Washington are already being paid by the taxpayer’s hard work and such ‘fringe benefits’ are nothing more than a waste of dollars already taken away from American families.” RELATED: Taxpayers Fund Free Yoga For Federal Bureaucrats
The yoga bill is the fifth measure Salmon has introduced in 2016 as part of his “Shrink Our Spending” campaign, intended to highlight and eliminate government waste in light of the nation’s more than $19 trillion debt.
