A student at Nicolet High School in Wisconsin got suspended for bringing a Confederate flag to English class Wednesday, unfurling it and proclaiming “White Privilege Day.”

Police immediately showed up to the school and the student was subsequently suspended, according to WISN-TV’s Thursday report. The administrators labeled the incident as a “derogatory and offensive demonstration,” adding that it upset many of the students’ feelings.

The principal of the school, Gregory Kabara, sent around an email to parents explaining what had happened on the last day of class for seniors.

“This action disrupted the class and upset many students. While district policy allows for students to initiate conversation about a controversial issue, it must be presented in the ordinary course of classroom instruction and cannot be disruptive to the educational setting. The student’s actions were a clear violation of this policy,” Kabara said, according to WISN-TV.

Administrators are still investigating the incident. They’ve also made available personnel who students can go to if they’d like to discuss the unfurling of the Confederate flag and how it made them feel.

Nicolet High School District Superintendent Robert Kobylski said in a statement, “Fostering an educational community based on tolerance and respect is of the utmost importance to the administration, faculty and staff at Nicolet.”
