Like Father, Like Son: Orlando Terrorist’s Father Expressed Support For Afghan Taliban
Seddique Mateen, father of the Orlando shooter, immediately disclaimed the connection between Islam and his son’s massacre of 50 people, but it turns out that Seddique has supported the Afghan Taliban.
Seddique hosts a program called the “Durand Jirga Show” and has posted numerous videos of the footage to YouTube. In one of the videos, he actually expresses support for the Taliban in Afghanistan, according to a translation from The Washington Post.
“Our brothers in Waziristan, our warrior brothers in [the] Taliban movement and national Afghan Taliban are rising up,” he said. “Inshallah the Durand Line issue will be solved soon.”
But Qasim Tarin, who has featured on Mateen’s show in the past, said of Mateen, “He’s obviously against Taliban and ISIS and all that.”
The video posted above suggests otherwise, though Mateen does routinely rail against Pakistan and Pakistan’s intelligence services.
“[H]e is absolutely against ISIS and Pakistanis and, of course, ISI intelligence,” Tarin added.
The Durand Line marks the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan and separates the Pashtun ethnic group, as it cuts right through the middle of their homeland. Mateen is clearly not in favor of Pakistan, but it is unknown whether he is himself Pashtun. The Afghan Taliban is largely comprised of Pashtuns.
In another video, he’s shown sporting army fatigues and declaring the arrest of “Karzai, Ashraf Ghani, Zalmay Khalilzad, Atmar, and Sayyaf.”
Ashraf Ghani is the current president of Afghanistan.
“They are against our countrymen, and against our homeland,” Mateen said.
