A pedestrian was gruesomely killed by an alleged drunk driver Monday morning when an automobile hit him at high speeds in California.

The driver continued for about a mile, with the victim lying in the passenger seat, before stopping and walking away from her vehicle, according to police in Oceanside, California.

Police say 29-year-old Esteysi Sanchez Izazaga drove her car onto the sidewalk and collided with a man at such high speeds, his body flipped over the hood and crashed through the windshield. One of the man’s legs was severed by the roof of the car and landed on the trunk, according to local reports. The man’s body rested head-down on the passenger seat while Izazaga continued to drive for another mile.

Local San Diego NBC affiliate KNSD reports that around 6:30 a.m., eyewitnesses saw Izazaga exit her vehicle and flee on foot. Izazaga was found by police a few blocks away.

Police say they suspect Izazaga was driving under the influence. Her behavior was unusual, Oceanside Police Sergeant Ignacio Lopez told KNSD. “We don’t know what emotions she was experiencing, if she was in shock over the whole thing, or if her level of impairment didn’t register,” Lopez said.

KGTV ABC 10 News reports that the victim was a “known transient,” and officers believe he was walking to or leaving a local soup kitchen. First responders found the victim’s pants, shoes, wallet and identification scattered in the street. The man’s name has not been released.

Izazaga, who also goes by Stacy Sanchez, is charged with vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run, and is in custody on $130,000 bail.
