“The ability of the United States and Mexico to do business, to give Americans and Mexicans the opportunity to visit our respective countries for tourism and other purposes is something that makes a substantially positive contribution to our economy and economic growth,” Earnest explained. “So maintaining those ties is important.”

However, Earnest also stated that President Obama also believes that “securing the border is important.”

“That’s why under President Obama’s leadership, we’ve made a historic investment of resources and personnel to secure the border between the United States and Mexico,” he continued. “But we certainly don’t want to do that in a way that doesn’t unnecessarily inhibit lawful travel between our two countries.”

Obama is slated to meet with Mexican President Enrique Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Washington, DC on Wednesday.
