This week’s twentysomething female high school teacher busted for having a summer romance with a recently-graduated, 18-year-old male high school student is Amanda Caye Dreier.

Dreier, 27, was — until earlier this month — an English teacher at Ankeny High School in the pleasant Des Moines suburb of Ankeny, Iowa.

She is also married.

Dreier’s terrible, horrible, no good, very bad month began at approximately 11 p.m. on June 11, reports Des Moines CBS affiliate KCCI.

On that mild Saturday night, local police officers spotted Dreier’s car parked next to another car in the vast parking lot of the Prairie Ridge Sports Complex — an impressive network of baseball fields, soccer fields and football fields (and fishing ponds).

The officers — who had been in the vicinity because of some unrelated crime over by the public library — approached and found Dreier and the unidentified, 18-year-old male in one of the cars.

The cops did not discover Dreier and the 18-year-old male in flagrante delicto. However, the circumstances “didn’t sit right with the officer,” Ankeny police spokesman Joe Schaffer told The Des Moines Register.

Local detectives then went to work investigating text messages between the teacher and her paramour. Sure enough, the detectives say, there is evidence of an ongoing sexual relationship.

“It was obviously some unscrupulous behavior they uncovered during the investigation,” Schaffer assured the Register. “We went back as far as we could,” he added. At this point, detectives say they aren’t sure when the relationship “started to turn” into a tryst.

The adult male graduated from Ankeny High June 2016. It’s not clear if he was a student in any of Dreier’s English courses.

The adult male’s Ankeny Centennial High commencement ceremony occurred on June 4.

It is against the law in Iowa for a certified schoolteacher to engage in sexual acts with a student until 30 days after the student graduates.

Dreier turned herself in on Friday afternoon and was later released on a $5,000 bond.

She faces felony charges of sexual exploitation for her alleged sexual relationship with the 18-year-old male student. If she is found guilty, her prison term could be up to five years and she could could face a fine of up to $7,500.

The 2010 Iowa State University graduate resigned from her teaching position on June 13.

A Friday statement from the Ankeny Community School District expresses shock and disappointment.

“Our district staff members work hard to protect and educate students every day,” the statement obtained by Des Moines NBC affiliate WHO-TV reads. “In any allegation of misconduct we are shocked and disappointed when the highest standards of education have not been met and the good work of educating students is undermined.”

Police are refusing to release the name of the 18-year-old male caught with the 27-year-old English teacher because, they insist, he is the victim of a suspected sex crime.
