House Oversight Committee chairman Rep. Jason Chaffetz said on Thursday that there is a “double standard” with Hillary Clinton, adding that if an “average Joe” did what she did, they would be in “handcuffs” and in “jail.”

Host of NBC’s “Today” show Savannah Guthrie asked Chaffetz, “Do you believe in [Comey’s] impartiality or do you think he is biased? (RELATED: ‘EXTREMELY CARELESS’ — FBI Director Comey Says Clinton Mishandled Classified Info [VIDEO])

“I think the FBI director is a man of integrity,” Chaffetz said. Adding that he was interested “in his findings. And he found that Secretary Clinton was extremely careless with information that we entrust to very few people that put people lives in danger. And that’s why we have them up to discuss his findings.” (RELATED: 2015: DOJ Prosecutes A Naval Reservist For Mishandling Classified Info WITHOUT MALICIOUS INTENT)

Guhtrie followed up asking if Clinton got “preferential treatment by the federal government” to which Chaffetz replied, “That’s a legitimate question for the FBI director because if you listen to the fact pattern laid out by the director, I’m mystified. There seems to be a double standard. If the average joe had gone through that, they probably would have handcuffs on them and probably be in jail.” (RELATED: FBI Recommends ‘NO CHARGES’ For Hillary Clinton [VIDEO])

“But if your name is Clinton, if you happen to be part of the powerful and elite, there seems to be a different set of standards,” Chaffetz said. “The Department of Justice has prosecuted people for far less and here Hillary Clinton, they’re just letting her go.”

Host Willie Geist followed up asking Chaffetz if Clinton “committed a criminal act.”

“I do believe that there are statues on the book, there are laws on the book that were clearly broken. You cannot put classified information in a nonsecure format. She did it for years. It put people in jeopardy. It may have been hacked. She lied and misled the American people and the ultimate jury in this is going to be the American people. They get to make this decision. Do they want somebody so untrustworthy to be the chief executive?”

Adding, “I do believe that she broke the law.”
