Atlanta area police officer Brian McKenzie chased down Victor Nunez after the suspect fired several shots at McKenzie early Friday morning.

Nunez opened fire on the drunk driving task force member several times around 1:00 AM Friday morning from a stolen blue Ford Explorer. McKenzie pursued Nunez in a short chase through a shopping center. The police chase ended when Nunez crashed the car.

Nunez remained silent during police questioning, Detective Zachary Frommer told reporters for the Associated Press. “I know detectives have been talking to him, but I don’t know how much he’s talking.” Originally, police thought there was a second suspect in the car, and used a police helicopter to scan the area around the crash. Investigators suspended the search shortly afterward, concluding there was no additional suspect.

Frommer told reporters McKenzie handled the situation very well. “He jumped right into action and did a great job chasing this guy down and catching him.” The local news station announced Nunez faces charges in aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of methamphetamine, reckless driving, and then other unspecified charges centered around Nunez’s use of the stolen car.

Police still have very little information about possible motives. and are awaiting tests to discover if methamphetamines were in Nunez’s system during the attack.
