A police officer is in the hospital after being shot by an African-American male during a traffic stop around 11 a.m. Friday in Ballwin, Missouri.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the male officer is in critical condition after being shot at least once in the neck. Three shots total were reportedly fired.

A local resident told the Post that she heard gunshots and ran to help the officer. She held towels against his neck to stop the bleeding as a nurse performed CPR and another witness called 911.

Shortly after he fled on foot, the suspect was apprehended and a weapon was recovered.

The St. Louis Police Department is investigating the incident.

“Make no mistake, we believe that Ballwin officer was ambushed,” St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar.

Officials described the suspect as tall, thin African-American male, according to Fox 2 Now St. Louis.
