Dallas police killed a suspect in Thursday night’s attack on police officers that left five dead with a bomb delivered by a police department robot, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings revealed Friday morning.

The suspect had taken cover in the El Centro College parking garage for several hours, during which time he told authorities he wanted to kill whites and was upset about the Black Lives Matter movement. (RELATED: Dead Shooter Identified)

Dallas police made a determination that the safest course of action was to “blast him out,” using a robot to place an incendiary device in proximity to the suspect.

“We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was,” Rawlings said at a press briefing Friday morning. “Other options would have exposed our officers in grave danger.”

Dallas Morning News reporter G.J. McCarthy filmed part of the confrontation.
