Denmark’s typically cold, wet climate is about to turn into a coastal paradise this summer thanks in part to global warming, according to a report from Danish magazine Fagbladet 3F.

The study, conducted by Greek researchers and partially funded by the Danish Meteorology Board (DMI), shows Denmark, a Scandinavia country known more for its chilly summers, could become a summer beach resort for Europeans as the temperatures continue to heat up.

Only European countries Andorra and Luxembourg, neither of which are considered beach friendly, were predicted to experience higher temperature increases than Denmark, according to the report.

“Denmark takes third place amongst the countries that will see a positive increase in the tourism-climate index during summer months,” climate researcher Cathrine Fox Maule told DMI.

While environmentalists claim negative effects associated with global warming could render Earth unlivable, some local restaurant and hotel chains are downright giddy at what the warming trend will mean for business.

“Although it’s not necessarily an encouraging thing overall, it’s positive that Denmark will be become a more attractive holiday destination, since it will mean an increase in employment opportunities in the sector,” John Frederiksen, vice chairman with trade union 3F’s Private Service, Hotel and Restaurant section, told reporters.

He added: “It will be easier for our members to find jobs in hotels and restaurants.”

Denmark’s summer days typically begin in June when temperatures top 77 degrees. But summer came early for Denmark this year.

According to TV2’s records the Nordic country enjoyed its earliest summer day in nine years, when the temperature hit “summer day” threshold in early May. It has been nine years since Denmark saw temperature increases that early.
