A Milwaukee police officer was ambushed in his squad car early Sunday morning and was shot multiple times while his colleagues were investigating a domesticating a disturbance call, WISN reported.

Officer Brandon Baranowski was taken to the hospital for surgery following the incident. It was discovered his vest saved his life.

“This is just another example of the risks our officers take each and every day to protect these citizens,” Asst. Police Chief William Jessup told reporters at a press conference.

Police identified the suspected as a 20-year-old gunman with two felonies on his rap sheet.

The perpetrator was found dead in a nearby yard from an apparent suicide, police told reporters. Additionally, police say the man was the same individual involved in the domestic disturbance.

The incident happened hours before three Louisiana police officers were gunned down in Baton Rouge. Three additional Baton Rouge police officers were injured in the same attack.
