Matt Damon’s new film “The Great Wall” just unveiled its first trailer. You can check it out below.

In recent years, China has become an increasingly crucial market for box office totals. As such, “The Great Wall” plops one of America’s biggest stars in Damon right into the far east. Though little is known about the movie’s plot, the trailer does offer us a broad idea of what’s to come.

“The Great Wall” suggests that Mongolian invaders weren’t the only reason China erected its mammoth protection system. Monsters of mysterious origin also plagued the land in this historical re-imagining. Damon appears to play a weary mercenary contracted to help in the defense effort.

The film is directed by popular Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, who cut his teeth with well-received films such as “Hero” and “House of Flying Daggers.” While “The Great Wall” has an abundance of talent both behind and in front of the camera, the movie may face controversy as marketing efforts start ramping up.

Damon is an international star, but already backlash has sprouted up online for casting a white actor as the lead in a largely Chinese film.

Controversy aside, “The Great Wall” boasts a quality cast and a unique director. It will arrive in theaters on Feb. 17, 2017. Damon can next be seen in “Jason Bourne,” which will hit theaters worldwide on Friday.
