A mother pleaded guilty Thursday to poisoning and killing her young child with an overdose of antihistamines and then setting a car on fire with the boy inside.

Narges Shafeirad, the 35-year-old mother from Maryland, pleaded guilty to first degree murder charges, reports the New York Daily News. Shafeirad confessed that she gave her five-year-old son Daniel Dana an overdose of Diphenhydramine.

Prosecutors said in June of 2015 that Daniel died from an overdose of antihistamines his mother gave him. Daniel most likely endured seizures and poor vision before he died, according to the Washington Post. Prosecutor Marybeth Ayres said that marks on Daniel’s face suggest he tried to fight against taking such a lethal dose.

“Daniel had two-and-a-half times the concentration of Diphenhydramine in his heart-blood than what would kill an adult,” Ayres said.

After giving her son the overdose, Shaferiad put Daniel’s body behind the front seat of the car and then set it on fire by pouring gasoline inside the car. She tried to make the scene look like it was started by a car crash.

When she talked to detectives after the fire, she claimed that she had gasoline in the car in case she couldn’t find a gas station while driving.

“She stated that while driving with the bottles of gasoline in the car to Ocean City, she lit a cigarette and the car started on fire,” Ayres said.

Shaferiad and her husband Hamid Azimi-Dana were going through a divorce when she killed their son. The couple separated in June 2013 and both filed restraining orders against each other. Both alleged in court filings that the other had been physically abusive to the other.

“We believe that she didn’t want to give the dad what he wanted,” Ayres said on Thursday.
