The former New York Police Department Commissioner told a radio show recently that he considers the Black Lives Matter movement to be “silly” and “ridiculous.”
Raymond Kelly, the former NYPD Commissioner, discussed his thoughts about Blacks Live Matter on the John Gambling Show. Kelly told Frank Morano, the guest host, that protests against the cops only serve to “depress” police officers.
“We have seen some questionable shootings and the optics of them look bad and they need to be looked at, but police officers are human and can make mistakes. A vast majority of cops do a good job and the major beneficiaries of the crime reduction have been communities of color,” Kelly said.
Kelly also discussed last week’s protest called Millions March 2016 that was organized by Black Lives Matter and other groups. Protesters called for the current NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton’s immediate resignation. They also called for the complete defunding of the police department, along with reparations to families of victims who had been hurt by the NYPD.
“They’re silly and they are not going to impact on anything. It is so ridiculous and myopic … this one group is concerned about black lives more than any other group,” Kelly declared.
Kelly also claimed that the protests cause a rift between communities and police officers.
“It causes cops to be much more insular and isolated. They turn to each other and that is not necessarily a good thing,” Kelly said.
