A young man in Northeastern China was mistaken for a hemorrhoid patient and taken into surgery while waiting for his wife to deliver their child.

According to the People’s Daily, on August 8, 29-year-old Mr. Wang decided to take a nap in a patient room at a hospital in Shenyang while waiting for the doctors and surgeons to complete his wife’s cesarean section.

After a short while, doctors called Mr. Wang into the operating room (OR). He was under the impression that something had gone wrong during the C-section, so he rushed into the OR. Expecting to see his wife, he was a more-than-a-little surprised by the events that followed.

“The doctor murmured something I didn’t quite catch, then I was asked to take my pants off,” Mr. Wang explained to People’s Daily reporters. He asked the nurse why he needed to take his pants off, and the nurse strongly responded, “I told you to take them off, so just do it,” reported China Business News.

Mr. Wang wondered how taking his pants off would make a positive contribution to his wife’s cesarean, but he chalked it up to a lack of understanding. He decided it was best to listen to the medical professionals, so he did as he was told and climbed onto the operating table.

It was only after the surgery was completed that Mr. Wang realized that he had undergone surgery. Coming off the effects the anesthesia, he quickly became aware that a change had taken place in his body. “I was having trouble walking, and my butt felt like it was on fire,” Mr. Wang told the Peninsula Morning Post.

While he was in surgery, Mr. Wang’s wife delivered their child. “I heard the baby crying when I was lying there, and I wanted to see it, but my butt hurt so much that I couldn’t move,” said Mr. Wang to the People’s Daily.

When he was finally allowed to see his wife and newborn child, Mr. Wang was overcome with joy, but when he was informed that he had just had surprise hemorrhoid surgery, he was absolutely furious. Mr. Wang demanded an explanation from the hospital as to how he was mistaken for another patient and given a surgery that he wasn’t at all signed up to receive.

As it turns out, Mr. Wang did actually have hemorrhoids, so the unexpected surgery wasn’t a total loss. Reports indicate that the hospital offered RMB 5,000 in compensation for violating the sanctity of Mr. Wang’s rectum, but the two parties have yet to reach an agreement on this issue.
