Police are hunting for a suspect after a 19-year-old died Saturday afternoon from a gunshot wound in southeast Washington, D.C.

Officers with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) responded to reports of a shooting at roughly 12:35 p.m. on V street in Anacostia. Officers found an unconscious young man suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency crews rushed the man to a local area hospital but were unable to revive him after exhausting “all lifesaving efforts,” according to a statement from the MPD.

Authorities identified the shooting victim as 19-year-old Gary Thompson, of Suitland, Md. Police do not have a suspect in the murder and are asking the public for any information that could help apprehend the assailant. The MPD offers a reward of $25,000 to anyone who can deliver information that leads to an arrest or prosecution in a homicide case. (RELATED: Man Stabbed To Death Near DC Children’s Hospital)

Violence spiked across D.C. last week, with a number of shootings and stabbings. A man died after being shot multiple times on Georgia Avenue in northwest D.C. in the afternoon August 8. A drive-by shooting in Dupont Circle left two men wounded early Friday morning just as bars and popular nightlife spots in the area closed and a gunman shot a man in the face in a McDonald’s bathroom attached to the Verizon Center Friday in broad daylight.

D.C. is suffering a violent year, with 85 homicides across the city. The District experienced a staggering 53 percent spike in the murder rate in 2015, the highest rate in eight years. The alarming surge in homicides continues in 2016, tracking closely with last year’s figures. There were a total of 105 homicides in 2014.
