A Chinese single father in Yibin, Sichuan was recently arrested for trying to sell his six-year-old daughter for $8,500 to raise venture capital, reported the Sina News Center.

After having a child with his girlfriend in 2010, fighting triggered by economic pressures and family tensions caused the couple to split up. Unable to work a job and take care of his daughter, the father and his daughter moved back to his hometown of Yibin.

The man’s sister was charged with raising the child while he attempted to turn his financial situation around, reported the People’s Daily.

The man reportedly decided to go into business for himself, but lacked the funds to successfully get his start-up business off the ground. So, he decided to use the only real resource he had available: his daughter.

After searching for a buyer on the internet, the man found a childless man in Jiangsu province and offered to sell his daughter to him. The two men agreed on a price of $8,500.

When the man set out to make the exchange, his sister discovered the plan and reported him to authorities. The Chinese police were able to stop the transfer before it occurred.

The little girl is presently in the custody of her aunt.
