It takes a lot of courage to be a conservative on most college campuses today. Two gutsy Turning Point USA activists remind us what they have endured and why they stand strong in this inspirational video interview for The Daily Caller News Foundation.
While campus liberals clamor for “safe spaces” because they’re required to read white authors like William Shakespeare in Yale’s English classes, these liberal activists also taunt, jeer and threaten conservative opponents and fellow students. We have yet to hear conservatives ask for “safe spaces” or claim they are being “bullied” by the left, although the intensity seems to escalate against campus conservatives. Two campus conservatives, who happen to be minorities, were in Washington, D.C., recently for a Turning Point USA conference for high school leaders.
Dominique Blair, a beautiful, strong, young woman who has been called “a race traitor” for being conservative and black, admits in this video interview that “sometimes I feel alone.” She, however, has friends who give her room to choose her own sets of beliefs without pressure. Blair, from a family of Democrats near Los Angeles, says she became a conservative or Republican during a Junior Statesman of America event.
Moriah DeMartino, a passionate, striking young woman, sued her college when officials refused to allow her to set up a Turning Point USA club on campus. She knows that her reputation became “the girl who likes limited government” in classes and social circles, but has grown stronger from being “that girl.” Moriah has friends who have endured death threats by liberals and radicals, and even a person who licked a conservative girl’s face and pronounced her now to have the Ebola virus back when this was a national fear.
DeMartino says she grew away from liberalism when she realized her compassion for the disadvantaged was being wrongly placed in government. She also found the tax bite within her first paycheck to be a wake up call, after her own hard work.
Turning Point USA is electrifying college campuses and growing fast. Today, it is on over 1,000 college campuses, with huge success on social media. On Facebook it has over 184k likes and on Twitter @turningpointusa has 51K followers. While its new site Hypeline exceeded 2.5 million page views recently.
With over 100 staff, the energy is palpable with this group. They use movies and TV shows like the “Hunger Games,” “Pretty Little Liars,” and “House of Cards” to explain why they think #BigGovernmentSucks or #CapitalismCures. Turning Point USA does not claim to be a think tank, instead, it calls itself a “battle tank” on college campuses — using tennis shoes, clipboards and counter-cultural signage.
