In a bizarre case that left medical professionals baffled, surgeons in Amritsar, India removed a large collection of knives from a patient’s stomach.

Dr. Jatinder Malhotra, managing director at Corporate Hospital, told the Times of India that a 42-year-old police officer named Jarnail Singh was admitted to the hospital Friday with stomach pains, weakness, and excessive weight loss.

An ultrasound revealed a growth, which doctors first suspected could be some form of stomach cancer. An endoscopy showed a couple of knives, while a CT scan then confirmed the guy’s gut was filled with cutlery.

During what Malhotra described as the “most dreadful surgery” he had ever done, the doctors and surgeons pulled a total of 40 knives out of the man’s insides. A number of the knives were closed, however, a few were open inside Singh’s stomach. Almost all of the knives had started to rust.

A psychological evaluation of the patient revealed certain mental instabilities. Apparently, Singh had been eating knives for a little over two months.

Singh explained his behavior with a simple “I felt like eating them,” reported The Indian Express. He said that he had an “uncontrollable urge” to consume knives.

“This was very unnerving. I have not witnessed something like this in my career as a doctor,” Malhotra told ANI.

The surgery took around five hours to complete. Afterwards, Singh told the medical team that he was feeling much better.
