MTV Is Giving Kanye Free Rein At The VMAs — Why It Could Be A Huge Mistake

You can love or hate Kanye West, but there is no denying he is one of the most entertaining people in the music industry. Or at least, MTV certainly thinks so.

They have invited the rapper to do whatever the hell he feels like for a full four minutes at the 2016 Video Music Awards in Madison Square Garden this Sunday.

Kanye is no stranger to the VMAs stage. At the 2009 show, Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift in the middle of her acceptance speech for Best Female Video because West felt that Beyoncé was more deserving.

Last year West was presented with the Video Vanguard Award (by Taylor Swift) after which he launched into a nearly ten-minute rant about fashion, family, bullshit award shows and announced that he would be running for president in 2020.

The VMA “producers, apparently, do not have any idea what he will decide to do,” according to Pitchfork. But it’s quite possible that Kanye doesn’t either, and it could go one of a thousand ways.

The producers of the show might have just given up. Even when there isn’t a plan for Kanye to speak, he manages to find a microphone anyway. And when he is scheduled to speak, they can’t be sure he keeps to the script. So why not give him a mic and let him go?

It could be a tremendous mistake or it could be a huge success. The only thing that is for certain is that those four minutes of Kanye will be highly entertaining. And maybe it’s all just another MTV ratings stunt like Kanye said.
