Police in Washington, D.C., are investigating a shooting that claimed two lives Friday night, adding to a disturbing trend of violence across the city.

Officers with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) responded to reports of a shooting at roughly 11:33 p.m. on 34th street in Northeast, D.C., near Benning. Responding officers found two adult males suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officials dispatched D.C. Fire and EMS to the scene, who transported one of the victims to a local area hospital. Despite intense efforts to revive the victim, they succumbed to their wounds and died at the hospital, according an MPD statement.

Emergency responders attended to the second victim but pronounced him dead on the scene after finding no signs of life. The MPD does not have any persons of interests or suspects in the double homicide and are asking community members with any information to come forward to authorities. MPD officials identified the victims as 40-year-old Raeshard Blue and 27-year-old Treyvon Johnson from Northeast, D.C.

The homicide rate spiked 54 percent in 2015 and is only 16 percent lower so far this year. Homicides have tripled this year in Ward 7.

D.C. is suffering a violent year overall, with 88 homicides across the city. The alarming surge in homicides is down from the shocking numbers in 2015, but is still historically high. There were a total of 105 homicides in 2014 and 88 in 2012.
