Students at an Arizona high school staged a walk out Monday morning after two students were told to remove their “Black Lives Matter” T-shirts.

About 10 students walked out of their classes at Buckeye Union High School and were met outside by various civil rights organizations’ representatives, reports AZ Central. The representatives spoke in favor of the students’ actions.

“Stand up, fight back,” the students said as they left the school.

Student Mariah Harvard wore her “Black Lives Matter” shirt to school Aug. 19 and said she was confronted by a student who told her that “black lives don’t matter.” According to Harvard, she told the student her shirt was important to her, and that’s when school officials got involved.

School administrators informed her that she would not be allowed to wear the shirt again.

Harvard decided to wear her “Black Lives Matter” T-shirt for school picture day last week anyway, but the vice principal had the girl change into a white shirt.

Another student also wore a “Black Lives Matter” shirt and was told to remove it as well.

Havard’s mother said that other students at the school made death threats to some of the protesting students. Police said they investigated the claims, but could not find anything credible.

“The district is working with staff, local leaders, and black lives matters representatives to develop a plan to turn the incident involving the black lives matter T-shirt from a negative situation into a positive learning experience,” Eric Godfrey, the Buckeye Union High School District Superintendent, said in a statement.
