Claudia Kennedy, the Army’s first ever female three-star general, said Monday GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump is just a bigot who would ruin the values supporting the military.

In an op-ed for Defense One, Kennedy, who is now retired, ignored advice from numerous former military officials begging fellow retired military figures to avoid wading into the muck and mire of partisan politics, as it harms the reputation of the Pentagon as fair and neutral.

Instead, Kennedy went ahead with a piece slamming Trump for his “bigoted” attack on Khizr and Ghazala Khan, saying that Khizr prohibited his wife from speaking to the Democratic National Convention. Khizr’s son, Humayun, served in the Army and died in Iraq.

“It was an unwarranted and bigoted attack on a Gold Star mother and a family who have given so much for our country,” Kennedy said. “But Trump’s comments didn’t just reveal his insensitivity, bigotry and contempt for the values that have made our military the finest in the world. They profaned the sacrifice of our fallen soldiers and demeaned the military families who give so much in service to our country.”

For Kennedy, this isn’t the first time Trump has insulted the military, referencing an example from last year, in which Trump savaged GOP Sen. John McCain and said he was “not a war hero.”

“I like people who weren’t captured,” he said.

Hillary’s record is vastly different, Kennedy argued. Instead of using veterans as political props, Clinton has proposed a serious plan to reform the Department of Veterans Affairs, claimed Kennedy. During her time as a senator, she pushed to improve care for veterans suffering from PTSD.

Trump, on the other hand, would undermine an “inclusive” and “fair” military.
