Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain managed to overcome his primary challenger, doctor and former state senator Kelli Ward, Tuesday in the race to retain the nomination and hold onto his seat in November.

The 2008 GOP presidential nominee survived his opponents attacks, alleging the candidate, who turned 80 Monday, was too old and weak to serve another term.

The primary race was the most contentious in his political career since he won his seat in the upper chamber in 1986. The incumbent ran on his conservative credentials when it comes to spending cuts, abortion and Second Amendment rights.

McCain’s relationship with GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump was a hurdle he had to overcome in the race, as the billionaire refused to endorse the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee chairman. Trump notoriously mocked McCain’s military experience, yet the senator still opted to throw his support behind the presidential contender despite denouncing several of his more controversial remarks.

Ward repeatedly attacked McCain for his bipartisan work on immigration bills and questioned his allegiance to the GOP nominee. McCain ultimately prevailed and is expected to keep his seat in November.

He will face Democratic U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, who ran uncontested for the nomination, in the general election this fall.
