Republican nominee Donald Trump thinks that Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank Janet Yellen is keeping interest rates artificially low because it could help President Barack Obama, according to his statements Monday.

“Any increase at all will be a very, very small increase because they want to keep the market up so Obama goes out and let the new guy … raise interest rates … and watch what happens in the stock market,” Trump said in a Monday interview with CNBC. “[Obama] wants to go out. He wants to play golf for the rest of this life. And he doesn’t care what’s going to happen after January.”

Trump concluded the interview by explaining that, as a businessman, he likes low interest rates, but that rates needed to be higher for the good of the nation.

The United States could always print more money to pay off the national debt, Trump told reporters in May, a position seemingly at odds with Trump’s support of higher interest rates. Trump paradoxically also advocates public infrastructure projects supported by borrowing. Because interest rates are so low, the country needs to go on a big borrowing spree to rebuild failing infrastructure and other projects, Trump said in August.

“The interest rates are so low, I mean, the numbers are so low, that yes, this is the time to borrow and to borrow long-term,” Trump said. “You’d be paying so little interest right now. This is the time to borrow.”
