The suspect who stabbed eight people at a mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota has been identified as Dahir Adan, 22, a Somali college student who immigrated to the U.S. at a young age.

Leaders of the Somali-American community in St. Cloud describe Adan as a smart and accomplished junior at St. Cloud State University who didn’t have a history of violence. He worked part-time as a security officer and neighbors describe him as a person “who minded his own business.”

The last Adan’s family heard of him was two hours before the massacre at the Crossroads Center, when he told them he was going out to buy an iPhone 7.

Minnesota is home to the largest terrorism recruitment investigation in America. Eleven Somalis have been charged with joining the Islamic State since late 2014.

The FBI called the stabbing “a potential act of terrorism” in statement Sunday. ISIS later claimed responsibility for the attack, calling Adan “a soldier” of the organization. (RELATED: ISIS Claims Credit For Minnesota Mass Stabbing Attack)

“The executor of the stabbing attacks in Minnesota yesterday was a soldier of the Islamic State and carried out the operation in response to calls to target the citizens of countries belonging to the crusader coalition,” a statement on the ISIS news service Amaq said.
