Volkswagen’s Audi suspended its head of development for the coming week as part of an ongoing investigation of the emission scandal, Reuters reports.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) found evidence Volkswagen was criminally liable in August. The investigation centered around whether or not the German car company was cheating its monitoring of diesel emissions. (RELATED: DOJ Fine Volkswagen $1.2 Billion Over Emissions Scandal)

The firm was allegedly using software to artificially lower its emissions numbers in its 3.0 L diesel engines.

In a Jones Day legal investigation, the firm found evidence that Stefan Knirsch, a member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG and former head of engine development, knew about the software in the firms 3.0 L engines and lied under oath, Reuters reports.

Knirsh has reportedly been told to clear out his desk and wait while further investigation begins next week.

Audi admitted that more than 2.1 million of their diesel engines were caught with cheating software in 2015, Car and Driver reports.

The DOJ is now looking into whether or not the suppliers the firm partnered with knew about the cheating software VW implanted into its diesel cars, according to USA Today.
